By now, it should be apparent to most of you that Microsoft has already started rolling out its Windows 10 Mobile update to most of its older handsets. But the procedure to update is not as simple as going into settings and clicking on the update button for most handsets. Here is a short walk through of the procedure to get Windows 10 Mobile running on you Windows 8/8.1 handset.
Step 1: Is you device ready for the update?
Microsoft has released the Windows 10 Mobile update only for selected handsets as of now. As a first step, check if you device falls in this list: Microsoft Lumia 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 730, 735, 830, 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD LTE x150q and BLU Win HD w510u.
If your device is not on the list, then it cannot be updated as of now. Don’t worry, there is always hope that Microsoft would update them in the future.
Step 2: Install the Upgrade Advisor app
Once you have confirmed that your device is indeed Windows 10 Mobile capable, head over to the Windows Store and install the Upgrade Advisor application.
Once the application is installed, open it and tap on “Next” to check if the Windows 10 Mobile update is available. If it is available, you will be greeted with the following message:
“Great news! The Windows 10 upgrade is available to install on your phone”. Click on “done” and close the app.
Step 3: Settings -> Phone Update -> Download Windows 10 Mobile Update
As the heading suggests, get into Settings, navigate to Phone Update, then download and install the update.
There are actually two distinct updates. The first update will change the device build to 10586.107, after which the second update must be downloaded and installed.
This will update the handset to the latest Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164.
