The leaks did indeed come true and Xiaomi has just launched the Mi 5s and is elder sibling, the Mi 5s Plus. Although not trafficable new devices, they have their own unique features which make them a worthy contender to the existing line up of flagships.
Xiaomi Mi 5s: Brightness and Contrast
Clad in brushed metal, the Xiaomi Mi 5s features a 5.15-inch display with a resolution 1920×1080 pixels. The display features a 94.4% coverage of the NTSC color gamut while offering a very bright 600 nit luminescence. It also has a contrast ratio of 1500:1 which makes it great for media. consumption.
The Mi 5s is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor which has 4 custom Kryo cores for excellent performance. It will available in a 3GB/64GB variant or a 4GB/128GB variant.
Those cameras though!
The rear camera features 12 megapixels spread across a large 1/2.3 inch sensor for great low light performance. The front camera is a HTC UltraPixel type 4 megapixel camera which Xiaomi claims to have a pixel diameter of 2μm. Both the cameras feature a wide F/2.0 aperture while the rear camera features a fast PDAF (Phase detection Autofocus) mechanism which reduces shutter lag and the improved the focusing speed.
Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor!
The real showstopper, however, is the Ultra-sonic Fingerprint sensor on the front. The technology is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Sense ID which tracks the contours, edges and valleys of the fingers to register and recognize the fingerprints. We were quite skeptical when we saw these details in the leaks but Xiaomi does appear to be doing more R & D than the competing companies, especially companies with fruit logos (of course, we are just kidding).
The Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor will remain functional even when your hands are dirty, since it tracks the contours and valleys instead of the distribution of static charges. It will also be harder to spoof when compared to the traditional fingerprint readers.
The Xiaomi Mi 5s has support for 3xCA network connectivity, along with the latest Bluetooth 4.2. It also features a dual-band MU-MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and NFC. It houses a 3200mAh battery and is equipped with the latest Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0.
Pricing and other details
The base model of the Mi 5s costs around RMB 1999 which translates to USD 299 for 3G B RAM and 64GB internal memory. While the variant with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage costs around RMB 2299 (which is USD 344).
Both the variants will be available in silver, gray, rose gold, and gold.
